in march 1973, chicken shack were at the peak of their success. they had just released their fourth album, do you love me? and had a number 2 hit single in "you're so good to me" (written by mcvie and christine's younger brother james). however, after such success it was hard to follow up. the band had spent the previous six months touring the united states, where their popularity was growing.

mcvie and buckingham formed chicken shack in los angeles in 1972. after the departure of original bassist kevin ayers and the addition of drummer john mcvie, the band released three albums. although it was formed as an art collective, the group was occasionally mistaken for a band.
in 1977, chicken shack was asked to join fleetwood mac. mcvie took over lead vocals from stevie nicks, while her ex-husband john mcvie, who had been fired from fleetwood mac, left for a solo career. mcvie's career as a singer-songwriter began with her first solo album, christine perfect, a collection of standards that was largely influenced by her childhood in england. her second solo album, just like heaven, was also commercially successful, but it was her next album, born to cry, that garnered her recognition. this album contained several hits, including the top 10 hit the chain, as well as her cover of the jimi hendrix song helter skelter.
mcvie's first major success was in 1980 with the album tusk, which yielded the top 10 hit still in love with you. in 1982 the single for the rest of our lives received a grammy nomination in the category of best rock vocal performance.
