There is also a "close in age" exception for 12 and 13 year olds. A 12 or 13 year old can consent to sexual activity with a partner as long as the partner is less than two years older and there is no relationship of trust, authority or dependency or any other exploitation of the young person. There has been a big retrenchment in the for-profit landscape. Many for-profit, accredited colleges and universities are closing. According to Education Dive, more than 100 for-profit and career colleges closed between 2016-17 and 2017-18 alone. In just the last week, there has been more news of closures (see here and here for another 100-plus campuses closing). Expect more for-profits to close in the years ahead, as well as more mergers.
And public universities will not be immune, as 20 closed in the same time period. The University of Georgia system has been consolidating campuses for several years now. The University of Wisconsin System is consolidating 13 two-year colleges into seven four-year colleges. Other consolidations are occurring in Alabama, and there have been consolidation conversations in Connecticut, Louisiana and Pennsylvania. According to Education Dive, of the 40 mergers that took place between 2010 and 2017, just under half involved at least one public college. And 36 public colleges have closed or consolidated since 2016.
Recent studies suggest that a shared neural ensemble may link distinct memories encoded close in time1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12. According to the memory allocation hypothesis1,2, learning triggers a temporary increase in neuronal excitability13,14,15 that biases the representation of a subsequent memory to the neuronal ensemble encoding the first memory, such that recall of one memory increases the likelihood of recalling the other memory. Here we show in mice that the overlap between the hippocampal CA1 ensembles activated by two distinct contexts acquired within a day is higher than when they are separated by a week. Several findings indicate that this overlap of neuronal ensembles links two contextual memories. First, fear paired with one context is transferred to a neutral context when the two contexts are acquired within a day but not across a week. Second, the first memory strengthens the second memory within a day but not across a week. Older mice, known to have lower CA1 excitability15,16, do not show the overlap between ensembles, the transfer of fear between contexts, or the strengthening of the second memory. Finally, in aged mice, increasing cellular excitability and activating a common ensemble of CA1 neurons during two distinct context exposures rescued the deficit in linking memories. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that contextual memories encoded close in time are linked by directing storage into overlapping ensembles. Alteration of these processes by ageing could affect the temporal structure of memories, thus impairing efficient recall of related information.
This paper tests and provides support for the emerging hypothesis that two distinct memories formed close in time may be linked, such that recall of one triggers recall of the other. Using a range of techniques including in vivo calcium imaging with miniature head-mounted fluorescent microscopes in freely behaving mice, Alcino Silva and colleagues show that learning-dependent changes in excitability can temporally and contextually link memories formed close in time. Interestingly the overlap between memory encoding ensembles and strengthening of the second memory within short periods of time do not occur in aged animals, which do not exhibit the increased hippocampal excitability necessary for such links to occur.
Tioga Road closes due to snow, usually from sometime in November through late May or early June. The road closure extends from the Tuolumne Grove, just east of Crane Flat, to Tioga Pass Entrance Station. (Highway 120, the continuation of the Tioga Road outside the park, is often closed in winter from Tioga Pass to five miles west of Lee Vining.)
When the Tioga Road is closed, it is not possible to drive to Tuolumne Meadows or enter Yosemite National Park from the east. All other park entrances, including those along Highway 120 from the west, Hetch Hetchy, Highway 140, and Highway 41, remain open all year.
Glacier Point Road closes due to snow, usually from sometime in November through late May or early June. From approximately mid December through March, the first five miles of this road are open to the Badger Pass Ski Area. It is not possible to drive to Glacier Point when the Glacier Point Road is closed.
Mariposa Grove Road and associated shuttle system close for the season on or about November 30 and reopen no earlier than March 15 (but usually not until sometime in April). The Washburn Trail is always open to hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing, and is the most direct route to Mariposa Grove in winter. The trail is two miles (3.2 km) each way with 500 feet (150 m) of elevation change. The trail may be snowy and/or icy during winter. While all trails within the grove are always open, some trails within Mariposa Grove are marked for winter use (by reflectors on trees).
Effective tomorrow, March 16, New York City schools will close. Starting March 23, the City will move towards a new Remote Learning Model for all school days until Spring Recess. Students will not report to school buildings for instruction during this time. School buildings are scheduled to reopen to students following Spring Recess on Monday, April 20, 2020.
